It Starts with Jesus' Words

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus told them to go. When they saw him, they worshipped him, but some doubted. Jesus came near and spoke to them, “I’ve received all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you. Look, I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age.”

- Matthew 28:19-20 (Common English Bible)

On a Mission

God is hungry to connect with you.  To know you inside and out, and for you to know God as intimately as you know your friends and family.  God reaches out to us throughout history longing to set us free from sin and to launch us into a life of joy and love.  God continues to reach out to us through scripture where we learn how to be Christ's disciples and grow into Christ's likeness.

God does not stop there.  We are invited to join God's mission and  to spread God's love to the world through sharing God's word and serving our neighbors.  God's invitations are called "callings," and we are called to be disciples who make disciples.

Encounter Scripture

Discipleship Challenge: One of the most significant ways we grow in discipleship is to read Scripture daily. John Wesley said about the Bible, “At any price give me the Book of God! I have it. Here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be homo unius libri [a man of one book].” But where do we begin reading Scripture?

Beginning July 1, 2021 and continuing every month after that, you will find daily Scripture readings for the month here [link to the Scripture readings]. The readings correspond to the Christian year. Also, on certain days you will see the name of a particular person from church history who can serve as an example of how God can and continues to work in the lives of ordinary people. It might be helpful to Google the person’s name to become familiar with that person.

Think of the power of many people reading and reflecting on the same Scriptures every day—listening to God speaking to us as a faith community through God’s written Word.

Grow Together

Often we rush through reading scripture if we read it at all.  Reading scripture with others calls us to slow down, think deep, and engage authentically.  Each person notices something different jumping off the page at them.  A group's shared insights and faithful questioning can easily take us deeper than we would go on our own.  You can read scripture together by signing up for a small group here or by commenting on these daily blog posts.
